Statistics on the NZ Health & Fitness Centre Industry:

Important: As we are a non profit organisation, run mainly by volunteers, enquiries by students or organisations outside our industry will not normally be supplied with information, especially where it requires time to find. We do however provide extremely competitive rates on such collection of information. No information will ever be provided about any specific businesses within our industry, we only provide statistical summaries.

 

General Statistics:

How many People use Fitness Centres in NZ ?
As estimated by the last census, over 540,000 New Zealanders said they went to a fitness centre or aerobics classes. (not this is NOT the same as "members of a fitness centre". It is estimated that between 8-10% of the population are members of Fitness Centres.

Average Price of a fitness Centre:
$448 per year (plus joining fee) (2001 Survey)

Number of people employed in the industry:
Estimated at 4,000 full time and 4,000 part time. (extrapolated from 2001 Industry Survey)

Total number of Clubs in NZ:
Depending on what is counted as "a club", there are between 150 and 400 clubs in NZ. The larger figure includes all clubs regardless of their size that offer some sort of structured exercise activities. The "150" is more in line with what the general public would consider a "fully functional" health and fitness centre.

Number of Clubs Represented by FNZ:
150+ Centres (almost 50% of all centres, and 90%+ of all major clubs in New Zealand). For a list see the Directory
